Chandler's pools are best understood through the timing of its explosive growth — because the city filled in right as pool building entered its modern era.
The craft had already come a long way by then. Gunite, the sprayed-concrete method that let builders shape a pool freely, arrived in the 1940s and drove a mid-century boom in kidney-shaped designs. Through the 1950s and '60s the fundamentals modernized — PVC plumbing replaced galvanized iron and copper, skimmers and main drains became standard equipment. Then two Arizona milestones landed in quick succession: aggregate finishes like Pebble Tec, invented next door in Scottsdale in 1987–88, and the state's pool barrier law in mid-1991.
Chandler's timing is the story. It was a farm town of about 9,500 people in 1960 and grew to roughly 30,000 by 1980 — but then the tech industry, led by Intel, turned it into one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, pushing past 240,000 in the decades since. That means the overwhelming majority of Chandler's pools were built during and after the 1990s, on the modern side of both the aggregate and barrier lines. These are pools that started life with aggregate finishes and were designed around a safety barrier from day one.
The practical upshot: a typical Chandler pool isn't fighting the same original-plaster, pre-barrier issues as an older Valley city — instead, many are now 20 to 30 years old and reaching the stage where surfaces, equipment, and plumbing all come due together. The exception is the older stock near downtown Chandler, where earlier pools can still turn up. Chandler's water is hard and variable, with published figures spanning roughly 8 to 23 grains per gallon, so managing scale is part of caring for any pool here.
